Assam makes COVID-19 tests mandatory for passengers coming from Mumbai, Bangalore

GUWAHATI: Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that passengers coming in from Mumbai and Bangalore -- among the worst-affected cities by the COVID-19 pandemic -- to get tested at airports and railway stations.

The state is looking to ramp up preventive measures in view of the upcoming Bihu festival, which was celebrated amid the COVID-19 lockdown last year amid a lack of spirits and revelry.

Karnataka reported 6,976 new cases of COVID-19 and 35 more deaths on Wednesday, taking the total number of infections to 10,33,560 and the toll to 12,731, the Health department said.

Bengaluru Urban district tops the list of positive cases, with a total of 4,60,016, followed by Mysuru 57,169 and Ballari 40,182.

In Mumbai, the overall tally of COVID-19 cases has risen to 4,91,698. Maharashtra state is the worst hit in the whole country.
