The Hailakandi Forest Department along with police launched a massive crackdown on timber smugglers. Divisional Forest Officer, NH Mazumder disclosed that the Forest Department with support from the district police launched a massive crackdown on timber smugglers involved in the illegal procurement of Mizoram origin timbers and trading in the district. In course of search operations conducted on July 8 and 11, three numbers of the illegal band saw had been dismantled with the recovery of illegal storage of sizeable quantity of Mizoram origin sawn timbers and some local homegrown timbers from two different hideouts.

The seized band saws and sawn timbers were brought to the Hailakandi divisional office complex, added Mazumder. Chief Conservator of Forests, Southern Assam Circle together with DFO, Hailakandi Division, police and frontline forest personnel took part in the joint operations. The DFO said operations will be further intensified till detection of illegal storage of timbers from different hideouts.  

Meanwhile, with spike in number of COVID-19 positive cases, the Hailakandi district administration has ramped up the health infrastructure to deal with the situation.
