Assam: SSB jawan kills wife in Dibrugarh, injures two

In an incident, a former SSB jawan opened fire at his wife and son at his residence in Dibrugarh in Assam. The incident took place at Sukan Pukhuri in the district.

As per information, the ex-SSB jawan, who has been identified as Sanjay Das, opened fire from .32 pistol at his wife Swapna Das and son following a family issue.

Later, Sanjay, who fled after the incident, opened fire at one of his relatives at Bogipul, Kumaranisiga along the 37 No National Highway in the district.

Following the incident, all the injured were rushed to the nearby hospital for medical assistance where Swapna Das succumbed to her injuries. The other two are undergoing treatment.

However, the reason is yet to be ascertained. Police have started an investigation into the case. “We have started an investigation into the incident. Everything will be clear once the investigation is over,” a police official said.

The incident that took place amid the lockdown in the country has raised questions about mental health issues. “The lockdown to mitigate the spread of coronavirus, which has led to an economic crisis, might be a cause behind the incident. However, the reason is yet to be ascertained,” a mental health expert based in Guwahati, Assam, said.

It may be mentioned that India has witnessed a surge in the mental health-related issues and suicide cases since the lockdown was enforced on March 25 initially for 21 days to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus in the country. The unemployment rate in the country has also witnessed a massive spike during the lockdown. The unemployment rate, which was 7.9 percent in April last year, has gone up to 23.4 percent in April this year, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy.
