The Assam education department is providing a special optional 12-day leave for teachers to learn Vipassana meditation, an ancient mindfulness technique.
This initiative is introduced for teacher capacity building, according to officials. The move coincides with the introduction of Vedic maths in Assam's school education.
Axom Sarba Siksha Abhiyan Mission, following a government order, has instructed district commissioners and principal secretaries of autonomous councils to disseminate this information among teachers.
Teachers have begun arriving at a centre in Chandrapur for the training. Despite no clear stance from teachers' organisations, the Students' Federation of India (SFI) has opposed the initiative, citing it as a disruption to regular classes.
