BJP will demolish 3,500 mosques: Badruddin Ajmal

GUWAHATI: Badruddin Ajmal, Dhubri MP and supremo of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), has ruffled various feathers after his proclamation that the rival BJP party "will demolish 3,500 mosques" across India.

"Who demolished the Babri mosque? They have now set their sights on all the mosques. Across India, they intend to demolish 3,500 mosques," Ajmal said at a rally in Gauripur, in an apparent bid to rile up minorities' sentiments ahead of the polls.

Addressing his supporters, the Maulana said, "If the BJP comes to power once again, they will ensure that the women cannot wear burqas, the men cannot wear their beards long, and you cannot don the traditional skull caps."

Notably, Ajmal made his statement two days after joining the 'grand alliance' fronted by the Congress to defeat the BJP. Congress and the AIUDF, along with four other political parties, declared the formation of a 'Grand Alliance' on Tuesday.

In a joint press conference held in Guwahati, the leaders of Congress, AIUDF, CPI, CPI (M), CPI (ML) and Anchalik Gana Morcha said all six political parties have decided to form a 'Grand Alliance' for the greater interest of the people of the state and to "save Assam".

Meanwhile, Atul Bora, Assam Minister and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) supremo, has turned down heavily on Ajmal for his "communal remark."

"Ajmal rode to power with such communal statements. He simply wants votes, which is why he has made such utterances. This is nothing but the employment of fear tactics in a bid to secure votes," the Agriculture Minister said.

Mominul Awal, chairman of the minority development board, slamming Ajmal, said, "It is a known fact that Ajmal always drags religion into politics. This is not the first time that this has happened. He should refrain from making such polarizing statements as that is not the way of Islam."
