Breaking: COVID-19 tests made mandatory for devotees visiting Kamakhya

GUWAHATI: The Kamrup Metropolitan district administration today restarted the COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) of devotees visiting the Kamakhya Devalaya in Guwahati, Assam.

COVID-19 testing at the devalaya was made mandatory after the outbreak of the virus in 2020. However, COVID-19 testing at the shrine was stopped on January 2 this year after a dip in the number of cases and fatalities. However, it was restarted amidst the rising COVID cases in the state and other parts of the country.

According to Bhupesh Sarma, secretary, Kamakhya Devalaya, the tests will be conducted in the Kamakhya-Nursery entry gate. All visitors will have to undergo the test before entering the temple premises.

Moreover, all priests of Kamakhya temple will also have to undergo a COVID-19 test, said the authorities.

It needs mention here that the active cases of COVID-19 in the state post the recently concluded assembly elections have witnessed a massive surge since April 7.

Assam reported 281 positive fresh COVID-19 cases on Friday.

There are 153 positive cases in Guwahati, 12 in Nagaon, 11 in Jorhat, and 10 in Sonitpur.

Three deaths have been reported in the past 24 hours.

On other hand, the cumulative number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in India crossed 9.43 crore on Friday.
