Congress candidates list almost finalised for Assam assembly elections

GUWAHATI: The wait for a list of Congress candidates for the Assam assembly elections scheduled for March 27, April and 6 is almost over with a list almost finalised after a hectic day of screening of candidates.

Big guns such as Ripun Bora, Rakibul Hussain, Debabrata Saikia, Rana Goswami and few orders are almost certain to contest from their existing constituencies. Bora’s name, however, figured along with his wife Manika Bora as a co-aspirant for the Gohpur seat. Similarly, Paban Singh Ghatowar’s name also figures along with his son Pranjal Ghatowar in Moran.

Hussain, Saikia and Goswami are almost certain to retain their Samaguri, Nazira and Jorhat seats. Former minister Ajit Singh is also a certainty for Udharbond.

There are names of two aspirants for some of the constituencies in the list that InsideNE has accessed so far.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge of Assam Jitendra Singh this afternoon said the candidates were being screened by a committee headed by former Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan in consultation with grassroots level party workers.

He also said that the panel would finalise the list of candidates late tonight.

Udharbond: Ajit Singh

Haflong: Nirmal Langthasa

Nazira: Debabrata Saikia

Jorhat: Rana Goswami

Samaguri: Rakibul Hussain

Khumtai: Bismita Gogoi

Amguri: Ankita Dutta

Goalpara (West): Abdur Rashid Mandal
