Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora on Friday stated that the party accepts the mandate of the people in the 2019 General Elections, but at the same time will continue to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
Addressing the media at Rajiv Bhawan, Ripun Bora accepted the lapse on his part as the party chief. He said that the party has been dealt a massive defeat in a great margin in the entire country.
Ripun Bora mentioned that since the Bharatiya Janata Party has announced to bring the Citizenship Bill in its vision document, the Congress party will oppose it to all extent it can.
He expressed satisfaction over the party’s win in three seats in Assam, especially the Nagaon constituency that has moved back to the Congress after 20 years in BJP hands. He added that this time, the vote share for the Congress has increased by 7 percent.
It is to be mentioned that the BJP has grabbed 9 seats in Assam leaving behind Congress with just 3 seats and AIUDF with 1 seat.
It may be mentioned that the Congress candidate from Nagaon, Pradyut Bordoloi, Abdul Kaleque from Barpeta and Gaurav Gogoi from Kaliabor won the elections on the Congress party ticket.
