GUWAHATI: In a season of distortion of facts and history to woo voters, the Congress also joined the race by making a fusion of the two great epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata.

"When Shree Ram was exiled, Dhritarashtra closed down his eyes," said party national general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala at the press meet here today.

Unlike some BJP leaders, who go uncorrected for their distortion of facts, AICC spokesman Gourabh Vallabh, who was sitting beside, was even caught on the mic trying to correct Surjewala, saying it should be “Sri Krishna”.

Microphone blunder is not new to the Congress in Assam. Party state president Ripun Bora started the election year being caught on the press conference dais telling Kaliabor MP Gaurav Gogoi promises are not made to be kept. He was unaware that mics were switched on.

According to the Ramayana, Dasharath was the father of Lord Rama, while Dhritarashtra is a character in the Mahabharata who is the father of the Kauravas.

Surjewala was accusing the Election Commission of India of turning a blind eye to the recurrent recoveries of EVMs in BJP leaders’ vehicles after the polls.

Assam’s political scene has witnessed a turmoil since last night when EVMs were recovered from a vehicle belonging to BJP candidate from Patharkandi Krishnendu Paul.

Election Commission of India has issued a notice regarding the same matter and also announced re-polling in Ratabari LAC.

To criticise the same and rake up a row, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee today held the press meet in presence of Surjewala and a few others.

"We’ve submitted a written complaint with Election Commission of India. But, we want to ask it again, if it is a part of this EVM theft, or is it deliberately keeping its eyes closed like Dhritarashtra?" remarked Surjewala.
