Locals in Dibrugarh district of Assam staged a protest outside the Police Station demanding the release of a local Muslim leader, Azad Khan, who was arrested in connection with the September 11 car vandalism that took place during Muharram.

A group of people gathered outside Dibrugarh Police Station demanding the release of Khan, who was arrested in connection to the violence carried out during while playing Taziya on September 11. The protestors have demanded his release at the earliest.

One of the protesters said that the incident was unfortunate. "Police had called us and asked us to bring Hussain along with us and they kept him in the station. After that, President Javed Akhtar, also known as Azad Khan, of Lions Sports Club was also suddenly called up. Police discussed with him and then, he was again called at 7 pm and has been kept till 11:30. He did not even take play Taziya. We request Dibrugarh SP Subashini Sankaran to investigate properly and let Javed Akhtar Khan go. He is the President of our Idgah Committee, Diamond Sports Club", he said.

"He is a social worker who is 57 years old. Why would he even indulge in such a demeaning act of vandalizing a vehicle? This is a conspiracy. He is also the General Secretary of Congress. This must be due to some political agenda", he alleged.

On the day of Muharram, some unidentified miscreants had disrupted the proceedings by vandalizing a few vehicles that were parked near the streets.

The locals alleged that the miscreants carried sharp weapons and hit what came their way in the presence of the police personnel.

It may be recalled here that three vehicles were vandalized during the Muharram celebrations. A case has been registered in this matter, and the concerned organizers have been contacted.

Muḥarram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. The general meaning of the adjective Muharram means “banned, barred, forbidden, illegal, illicit, impermissible, prohibited, unlawful, unpermitted, unauthorized”. It is one of the four sacred months of the year during which warfare is forbidden.
