Guwahati: Four persons from Assam Cachar district were sentenced to five years of imprisonment 18 years after they lynched a person in the district.
The four were identified as Ajoy Das, Anup Das, Satya Ranjan Das and Shubhash Das. All of them are residents of the Cachar district.
They had been convicted of murdering a person named Dipak Deb back in 2003. Deb was beaten by wooden sticks, batons and sharp weapons as he had intervened in a fight between two "gangs". The incident took place during the Bhuban mela. Although after the incident, the locals had taken him to medical facilities, he succumbed to his injuries in a hospital in Guwahati.
Eighteen years had passed since then and finally, on November 22, a local court had convicted the four. They have also been asked to deposit Rs 3000 as a fine each.
