GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has issued notice to activist cum legislator from Sibsagar Akhil Gogoi and asked him to appear before the court within three weeks following National Investigation Agency's (NIA) appeal challenging Gogoi's verdict on the Chandmari case by a special NIA court.
A special NIA court has acquitted Akhil Gogoi, who had been in jail since December 2019 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967, from all charges on July 1 after NIA failed in framing charges against him.
The NIA later on July 7 had moved the Gauhati HC challenging court's verdict on Akhil Gogoi.

Akhil Gogoi's lawyer Krishna Gogoi has asserted then talking to InsideNe that something likewise was already expected and the matter might get dragged to the Supreme Court as well in upcoming days.
Akhil Gogoi was arrested from Jorhat in December 2019 for his alleged role in violent anti-CAA protest and nexus with Maoist elements. Two cases were lodged against Gogoi in Chabua and Chandmari Police Stations, following which, Gogoi had been put in jail for almost 18 months.
