GUWAHATI: Gaurav Gogoi, who represents Assam's Kaliabor constituency in the Lok Sabha, today wrote to West Bengal's chief minister Mamata Banerjee to alert her about "heinous incidents of kidney removal" allegedly linked to a hospital in her state.
In his letter to Benerjee, Gogoi said that as per media reports from different corners of Assam, several people have been victimized by the human organ trafficking racket.
Gogoi said that as per villagers’ statements, the racket targeted villagers who were under financial distress under the pretext of paying them about Rs 3-4 lakh in exchange for kidneys.
Pointing out that the links of the racket have been traced to Kolkata., Gaurav Gogoi added that according to an established newspaper, all activities happened at the Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences in Kolkata.

The MP ruled that the pandemic has pushed people further into poverty and paved the way for such abominable instances. "In the hour of grief, we must stand in solidarity with the victims. Remaining committed to the protection of our people, we must send out a strong message to reflect our commitment to the aggrieved."
He urged the West Bengal CM to instruct the police to initiate an enquiry and verify the substance of the media allegations.
It needs mention here that police in Middle Assam's Morigaon district have arrested three people, including a mother and son duo, for allegedly preying on villagers to run a kidney trade racket.
In Dakhin Dharamtul village, about 85 km east of Guwahati, all the victims have either been grappling with COVID-19 restrictions-induced poverty or were desperate to repay loans that had forced them to sell off most assets. At least 10 people are suspected to be victims of the racket.
A woman named Lillimai Boro, her son Mintu Boro and their local contact identified as Ramen Medhi have been arrested. It is believed that Medhi is the mastermind behind the racket.
According to locals of the village, the accused used to take the villagers to Kolkata by luring them with the promise of huge amounts of money.
Investigations are on to catch others involved in the racket
