Police Caught Taking 'Bribes' from Truck Drivers at Manja Police Checkpoint in Karbi Anglong

Diphu, 31 July, 2019:

It has been reported that a Police officer posted along the National Highway-36 took bribe while checking TP challan papers from trucks drivers of vehicles carrying sand at the police station checkpoint at Manja road that passes through Karbi Anglong's Manja via Dimapur.

On 30 July, when a group of press members made their presence felt at Manja Police checkpoint (16 kms from Diphu) to clarify the bribe taking case caught authorities red handed while taking bribe from a truck driver of Rs. 300/-when the truck driver who handed the bribe confessed about it.

When the press asked the truck driver about the system of bribery that prevails in these parts, he said that if they don't give the bribe, they don't  get allowance to move past the checkpoint. He further confessed that in order to carry sand from Patradisa, they need to give bribe of Rs. 400/- to forest guards and also they need to chocke up Rs 300/- to Langmili forest beat office, 300/- to Silveta forest, 300/- to Mohongdijuva, 300/- for forest protection, 300/- to Manja Police Checkpost, 300/- to Dilai Police, 300/- to forest guards between Dillai to Lahorijan, ten mile 100/- and Rs. 900/- to Lahorijan Police and forest guard charges, after which only they would be allowed to pass.

The police officer guarding at Manja police checkpoint on being questioned by press replied: "We cannot comment on whose directions we are collecting the money. We are checking the vehicles and also the papers. There are a lot of people above us. We cannot clarify any further", he said.

The truck driver also added that they need to pay Rs 4200/- every time the truck passes through a checkpoint and the practice of bribery has been prevalent in the area for a long time.
