Right wing leader Satya Ranjan Borah attacked; terms it an "attack on Hinduism"

HOJAI: Controversial right-wing leader Satya Ranjan Borah was attacked on Friday by a gang of miscreants in his home district of Hojai. Borah, who is known as a controversial figure in Assam for his incendiary statements on a wide array of topics, later staged a protest in front of the Lanka Police Station as he "did not like what the Hojai SP said."

The right wing figure claimed that he was assaulted by a person who claimed to be his classmate. "I was talking to some acquaintances not too far from my own house when the incident took place. Namaz prayers had just ended, and these persons came up to me and grabbed me by the collar. They proceeded to abuse me using unparliamentary language -- the called me names and attacked me," he said.

An eyewitness said that Bora was beaten up by a small group of people. Locals came to his rescue, and he was finally whisked away from the spot right in the nick of time.

According to the leader, the Hojai SP threatened to have him arrested and alleged that the SP might be a part of the "conspiracy". "He said that I was there to incite communal clashes. He had threatened to arrest me based on a so-called complaint."

Calling an impromptu press meet right in front of the Lanka police station, where he sat down to 'protest', he said that an attack on him amounts to "an attack on the Hindu faith."

"The Hojai SP has abused me and threatened me on the phone -- he should be answerable to what happened. Three of us were attacked -- and my acquaintance also had his gold chain stolen," Satya Ranjan Borah alleged, adding that he will lodge FIR not only against the attackers, but also the SP of the Hojai district.

"The SP abused me on the phone. He asked me why I have come here -- this is my hometown and the incident occurred 1 km away from my house. I studied at that very school which is located there. The Hojai SP should come here, and if he cannot, he should step down at once," Bora said at the protest site.
