DULIAJAN: Sankar Jyoti Baruah will take charge as the new General Secretary of the All Assam Students Union (AASU), Inside Northeast sources have informed. Amid speculations of quitting AASU, Dipanka Kumar Nath retains his position as the President of the students’ organisation. It was being speculated that Nath, who played a major role in the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, would cast off his student body robes and jump headlong into active politics.

Meanwhile, the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) Adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya said that he will reconsider his decision of retirement after thousands of AASU workers demanded that he continue his stint with the student body.

In another significant development reported from the AASU's 17th General Convention, the student body has fixed 40 years as the age limit for its members to serve the organization.

The decision towards this end was taken following several amendments of the constitution of the student body on Saturday last.

As per the new amendments to the constitution, any AASU member or leader who crosses 40 years will have to retire from the organization.

As per other amendments, the term of the central executive committee of the AASU has been reduced to three years.

The amendments of the AASU's constitution will come into force with effect from 2023.
