GUWAHATI: The Satra Muktyi Sangram Samiti (SMSS) Gauhati University unit staged a 12-hour hunger strike in front of the university campus on the occasion of 72nd Republic Day today demanding unconditional release of jailed peasant leader Akhil Gogoi and repeal of the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019.
Several senior members of the students’ wing of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti sat on the strike from 7 am today.
“We are staging this hunger strike demanding immediate unconditional release of Akhil Gogoi who is being incarcerated on fabricated charges and repeal of the contentious CAA,” said the SMSS university unit’s president Kashyap Nandan Kalita.
“We are fasting on this day because India has lost its federal republic structure under the current BJP government. The government is intolerant and trying to convert the republic character of our Constitution into fascism,” Kalita added.
