AAMSU leader Rejaul Karim Sarkar hints at political role, rules out BJP

After being associated with the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) for nearly two decades, the organisation’s central president Rejaul Karim Sarkar on December 30 formally bid farewell to the student body at a programme held at Balapara in Jogighopa, Bongaigaon district.

Speaking on the occasion, Sarkar said he hoped to continue working for Assam, the Assamese people and the minority community in the days ahead.

Responding to questions about whether he would be joining active politics, Sarkar said that addressing the pressing problems faced by minority communities requires engagement on a political platform. He remarked that while movements on the streets have their importance, many long-standing and serious issues concerning minorities can only be resolved through political means and policy interventions.

When asked whether he would consider joining the BJP if invited, Sarkar categorically ruled it out. He said the BJP was a party where people who speak in communal terms tend to gather, and he did not see himself aligning with such politics. Emphasising his ideological position, Sarkar said he intended to work for Assam and the Assamese people through unity and harmony.

He further stated that the kind of politics he believes in is one that builds bonds between the majority and minority communities and focuses on the development of backward and marginalised sections of society. Sarkar said his aim was to promote inclusive politics rooted in social cohesion rather than division, signalling a possible future role in public life shaped by these principles.
