In strong opposition to the policies of the BJP-led Union and State governments, the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) and All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), Assam State Council, jointly launched the “Adhikar Yatra” on Friday from Jagun under Margherita Co-District.
The yatra, which began with a car rally from Jagun, will culminate at the Giridhar Thengal Coordination Centre in Titabor, Jorhat district, the organisers announced.
Highlighting the objectives of the yatra, the organisations put forth a set of key demands. These include granting land ownership rights to indigenous people for all occupied land without premium, providing special constitutional safeguards to protect the political, economic, social, and cultural rights of Assam’s residents, and immediate recognition of six ethnic communities as Scheduled Tribes. They also vowed to intensify the struggle against the central government’s notification extending the deadline for granting citizenship to foreigners until December 31, 2024.

The organisations accused both the Union and State governments of conspiring to weaken the people of Assam and “destroy them politically, socially, economically, and culturally in their own homeland.”
Leaders of AIYF and AIKS declared that the yatra will continue with vigour until the demands are met.
