Akhil Gogoi calls for united opposition in BTR, says Congress yet to reach out

Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has clarified his party’s stance on the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) elections, stating that Raijor Dal will contest a few selected seats.

He made the announcement while addressing a press conference in Kaziranga on Saturday.

Gogoi took the opportunity to urge the Congress party to consider opposition unity seriously, warning that a fragmented contest would only benefit the ruling BJP-UPPL alliance.

“Congress has already seen the consequences of contesting the Panchayat elections alone. If they go solo again in BTR, the BJP and UPPL will be the ones to gain from it,” he remarked.

The firebrand leader also revealed that since Gaurav Gogoi took charge as the new Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president, there has been no initiative from the Congress to initiate talks on opposition collaboration.

“We want all opposition parties to come together for the 2026 elections. Time is running out. If the opposition remains divided, it will hurt the democratic fabric of Assam,” Gogoi added, emphasising the need for strategic coordination in both BTR and state-level politics.

His remarks come at a crucial time as political temperatures rise ahead of the BTR polls, expected to set the tone for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
