Akhil Gogoi declares BJP MLA’s political fate sealed if he contests from Mariani

Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi has made a bold assertion, claiming that if he ever decides to contest from Mariani, it will mark the end of BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi’s political career in the constituency.

"I am not contesting elections this time. However, if I ever decide to run from the Mariani constituency, the outcome will be clear. Last time, the people of Mariani passionately urged me to contest, and now, with the constituency becoming more favorable after delimitation, the situation is even stronger. If I enter the race, this will mark Rupjyoti Kurmi’s last term in the Assembly—he will never win from Mariani again," Gogoi stated.

He further claimed that Kurmi is gripped by fear, both of electoral defeat and political uncertainty.

"He is afraid of losing, and his worries are twofold. First, he fears electoral defeat, and second, he has gained nothing from either the Congress or the BJP. If he loses Mariani, where will he go next?"

Gogoi also criticized Kurmi’s behavior in the Assembly, urging him to maintain the dignity expected of a legislator. The remarks have fueled speculation about a future showdown between the two leaders, raising the stakes in Mariani’s political landscape.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi has been directed by Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia to apologize to the people of Assam for his aggressive conduct inside the Assam Legislative Assembly.

The directive comes after Kurmi attempted to physically charge at Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi during a heated discussion in the Assembly.

Kurmi, a legislator from the Moran constituency, made headlines on March 21 when he left his seat and aggressively approached Akhil Gogoi, disrupting proceedings and drawing widespread condemnation.

The incident, which unfolded in the hallowed chambers of the Assembly, has been criticized as a breach of parliamentary decorum and an affront to democratic discourse.

In response to the controversy, the Assam BJP leadership swiftly intervened.

In a strongly worded letter addressed to Kurmi, BJP State President Dilip Saikia expressed dismay over the MLA’s actions. The letter stated, "Your act of leaving your seat and rushing towards a fellow legislator has drawn the attention of the people of Assam. Your conduct is contrary to the traditions of the Assembly."
