Asia's largest banana market gears up for festive season, buyers and sellers throng Darangiri market

As Chhath Puja and Diwali draw near, the famed Darangiri banana market, Asia’s largest of its kind, springs to life, operating around the clock to meet the soaring demand for bananas across several Indian states and beyond. Known for its remarkable capacity and variety, the market has become a bustling hub as traders from West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand, along with international buyers from Nepal, converge to secure their supplies.

In the days leading up to the festival season, an impressive 40 to 50 truckloads of bananas depart from Darangiri each day, destined for regions far and wide. The steady outflow of these trucks underlines the critical role of Darangiri in supporting the economy of Assam’s Goalpara district. The market has spurred the development of extensive banana plantations across Goalpara and parts of South Kamrup, where popular varieties such as Malbhog, Chenichampa, Saheb, and Manohar are cultivated to meet the ever-growing demand.

The impact extends beyond economics, offering a path to self-sufficiency for local youth by creating employment opportunities and supporting a robust agricultural ecosystem. The Darangiri Banana Market Management Committee has also made arrangements to provide essential amenities for truck drivers and traders traveling from afar, ensuring smooth logistics and encouraging the steady flow of commerce.

By leveraging its unique position as a banana export leader, Darangiri stands as a beacon of economic empowerment, highlighting the essential role of agricultural markets in driving local prosperity and cross-border trade.
