Assam: 74th KAAC foundation day celebrated with patriotic fervour in Diphu

The 74th Foundation Day of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) was observed with solemn reverence and vibrant celebrations in Diphu on Monday.

The event was held at the KAAC Secretariat and various heritage sites across the town, reflecting the spirit of unity, patriotism, and deep respect for the region’s legacy.

The commemorative day began with the unfurling of the National Flag at 8:30 AM by Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang at the KAAC Secretariat. The occasion was graced by Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) Amarsing Tisso, MLAs Dorsing Ronghang (Howraghat) and Bidyasing Engleng (Diphu), KAAC Executive Members, Members of the Autonomous Council, former MLAs, EMs, MACs, Principal Secretary Mukul Kumar Saikia, and a host of dignitaries and officials.

Following the flag hoisting, a series of floral tributes and garlanding ceremonies were held at iconic locations such as Khorsing Terang Park, Semson Sing Ingti Park, statues near the Diphu Medical College and Hospital, and the Sarsing Teron Memorial Hall, paying homage to the visionaries and leaders who laid the foundations of the autonomous council.

The highlight of the day was the Open Session organised at 11:00 AM at the Sarsing Teron Memorial Hall, where CEM Tuliram Ronghang attended as the Chief Guest and MP Amarsing Tisso as the Guest of Honour. The session featured traditional Karbi cultural performances, symbolising the rich heritage and identity of Karbi Anglong.

In his address, CEM Ronghang reflected on KAAC’s journey over the past seven decades and reaffirmed the council’s commitment to the development, peace, and welfare of the Karbi people. He emphasised the importance of preserving cultural roots while ensuring inclusive progress through education, infrastructure, and community empowerment.

Other speakers echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the autonomous council’s role in driving regional governance and grassroots development while safeguarding the unique identity of Karbi Anglong.

The celebration brought together community leaders, elected representatives, cultural troupes, youth, and local citizens, making it a day of pride, remembrance, and hope for the future of the hill district.

The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council was established in 1951 under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, granting autonomy to the region to govern its local affairs. The annual Foundation Day serves as a tribute to that milestone and a reaffirmation of the region’s self-governing spirit.
