Assam: AAP northeast coordinator in-charge voices opposition to Citizenship (Amendment) Act

Rajesh Sharma, the National leader and North East coordinator in-charge of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has voiced his opposition to the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Sharma, who has been campaigning for Manoj Dhanowar, the candidate for the 13th Dibrugarh Lok Sabha HPC from the 83rd Margherita Constituency, believes the Act will have detrimental effects on the economy, unity, and integrity of Assam and the country.

He further stated that the Act has rendered the historic Assam Accord null and void. The Accord, which came after a six-year-long Assam agitation during which 855 Assamese people sacrificed their lives to protect Assam from illegal infiltrators, clearly states that 24th March 1971 is the deadline for all people who have entered Assam.

However, the BJP-led Government at both the union and state levels has declared that anyone who came to Assam till December 31 2014 will be given Indian citizenship, thereby contradicting the Assam Accord.
