Assam aims to recruit 1,000 doctors annually over next 5 years: Himanta Biswa Sarma

In a significant push to strengthen the state’s healthcare system, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the government plans to recruit 1,000 doctors every year over the next five years.

Speaking on the future of medical infrastructure in the state, Sarma said, “In the next 4–5 years, our government will have the capacity to appoint 1,000 doctors annually, who will serve across various government and private hospitals.”

He noted that as the number of postgraduate medical students continues to grow, Assam will be in a stronger position to appoint more specialist doctors, enhancing both public and private healthcare services. “Gradually, with more PG doctors in the system, we will have a stronger pool of specialists by 2029,” he said, correcting a prior mention of 2023.

The recruitment initiative aligns with Assam’s broader healthcare reforms, including infrastructure upgrades in medical colleges, expansion of postgraduate medical seats, and the government’s commitment to universal health access.
