Assam: Ambulance plunges into water after hitting bridge in Goalpara, 1 dead, 4 injured
An ambulance carrying patients plunged into water following the collapse of a bridge railing on National Highway 17 in Kasadal, near Daranggiri, Goalpara. The incident resulted in the tragic death of a woman, Manomati Basumatary, and left four others seriously injured.
The accident occurred as the ambulance, transporting Basumatary along with three relatives and the driver, attempted to overtake another vehicle near the Kasadal Kali temple. The weakened railing of the bridge gave way, causing the vehicle to fall into the water below. The entire incident was captured on the temple's CCTV camera.
The injured individuals, identified as Kikong Basumatary (50), Mohan Basumatary (26), Sajidul Islam (19), who was driving the ambulance, and Basanti Brahma Choudhury (45), were immediately rushed to the FRU at Dudhnai for treatment.
The ambulance was en route to Dhanubhanga, transporting Basanti Brahma Choudhury who had just been discharged from Goalpara Basanti Brahma Chaudhary Hospital. The accident spot was notably narrower than required due to ongoing four-lane road construction, contributing to the severity of the incident. Authorities are investigating the structural integrity of the bridge and the circumstances leading to the collapse.
