A young woman was assaulted near Nirmal Chariali, located in the heart of Jorhat city on January 18. The altercation began as a verbal dispute between the woman and a young man, but soon escalated into a physical confrontation, sparking widespread public outrage.
Ritu Phukan, a member of the Bir Lachit Sena and the organization's general secretary in the Jorhat region, was caught on CCTV footage assaulting the woman. Phukan, seen holding the woman's hair while physically attacking her on a busy public road, displayed bullying behavior.
The Jorhat police quickly intervened and detained Phukan for his actions. The incident further stirred controversy when a bystander, who attempted to intervene and protect the woman, was met with hostility from members of the group to which the assailant belonged.
In a turn of events, the pan shop owner, who had tried to help the woman, was taken to the police station. Authorities forced him to apologize for his involvement in the incident, as he had stepped in to aid the victim.|
