Assam: Bir Lachit Sena leaders detained amid anti-CAA demonstration in Sivasagar

The Assam police detained nearly thirty protesters including leaders like Assam's Central Secretary Rontu Paniphukan and Central Organizing Secretary Chainali Chaliha during a demonstration against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The detainees affiliated with the Bir Lachit Sena, expressed defiance against what they perceive as the authoritarian actions of the state government. Bir Lachit Sena issued a stern warning, asserting that they will not be intimidated by the government's actions and criticizing its apparent disregard for democratic protests.

The police's handling of the situation has sparked condemnation from various quarters, including the Army and the general public, particularly regarding the detention of women protesters.

President of Bir Lachit Sena, condemned the police's actions, likening the situation to a "Hitler rule." He accused the government of selectively targeting their peaceful protest while allowing other events to proceed without hindrance.

According to him the detained protesters were forcibly taken into custody drawing comparisons to historical struggles against colonial rule. He reiterated the group's commitment to combat what they perceive as illegal immigration from Bangladesh, drawing parallels to the expulsion of the British.

The incident has ignited controversy, highlighting concerns about the state's approach to dissent and protest activities, particularly in the context of the ongoing debate surrounding the CAA.
