Assam: CAA protest led by opposition parties ahead of PM Modi's Kaziranga visit

As anticipation mounts for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's forthcoming visit to Kaziranga, a coalition of 16 opposition parties is leading the charge against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in Assam.

Speaking to reporters, Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi stated the significance of the Prime Minister's visit urging him to address the concerns of Assamese citizens regarding the CAA. "Prime Minister Modi, while coming to Assam should give us words and assurance that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, or CAA, will not be implemented in Assam," stated Gogoi.

Highlighting the potential threat to Assamese culture and identity posed by the CAA, Gogoi asserted, "Without Assamese culture, language, tradition - we will never ever allow foreigners to be in Assam." He called on PM Modi to heed the demands of the 16 opposition parties and refrain from enforcing the controversial legislation in Assam.

As anticipation mounted for PM Modi's visit to Kaziranga, Gogoi highlighted the clarity of their demand: "Do not implement CAA in Assam." He warned of widespread opposition should the BJP government proceed with its plans, stating, "If it is done or about to get implemented, the entire Assam will be compelled to protest against the BJP government."

Accusing the BJP government of inciting violence and stifling dissent, Gogoi criticized the perceived authoritarian tactics employed by Assam's Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh. "There is no democracy in Assam; there is dictatorship," Gogoi alleged, urging authorities to refrain from intimidation tactics.
