Assam: Chinese community in Margherita celebrate 'Ching-Ming' festival, honor their ancestors

The traditional Chinese festival "Ching-Ming" was observed in the Tikak settlement area of China Basti in Margherita on April 14, Sunday.

As the people of Assam gear up for the festivities of Rongali Bihu and the New Year celebration, Chinese families residing in the Tikak Settlement area under Tinsukia district chose to honor their ancestors by observing "Ching-Ming" at the Chinese crematorium.

Jomy Lee, a descendant of Chinese heritage, explained that the annual observance of "Ching-Ming" serves as a tribute to their departed ancestors. During the ceremony, offerings including meat, fruits, sweets, chocolates, wine, water, flowers, candles, and incense sticks are presented at the gravesites.

The Chinese community in the Tikak settlement area consists of seven families. Jomy Lee noted that while Northeastern Coalfields Coal India Ltd. Margherita has constructed the boundary wall of the Chinese crematorium, they have not received any assistance from the Assam government.
