Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on September 22 shared a detailed update on the funeral arrangements of legendary singer Zubeen Garg, whose passing has left the state in profound grief.
The Chief Minister said that, along with the ambulance carrying Zubeen’s mortal remains, only a small bus with his wife, close relatives, and friends will accompany the procession. “Except for that, no other vehicle will be part of the entire procession. Just like we brought him home from the airport, this procession towards here will also proceed smoothly,” he assured.
Upon reaching the cremation ground, pallbearers from the Assam Police will escort the singer’s mortal remains from the national highway. The police will then pay their final respects with a gun salute, after which the priest will perform the last rites as per family directions. “His family will arrive shortly, having discussed the last rites with the priest, and as they direct, we will act accordingly,” Sarma added.

Highlighting security and traffic measures, the Chief Minister announced that no vehicles will be allowed to enter from the Jagiroad side on the day of the funeral, while vehicles heading towards Meghalaya will be permitted. Restrictions will also be enforced from the Jorabat side for at least four to five hours to ensure a smooth and dignified ceremony.
In a mark of respect to the beloved icon, the Assam government has declared both today and tomorrow as dry days. The Meghalaya government has also announced that all wine shops along the route from Jorabat, through which Zubeen’s mortal remains will be brought, will remain closed.
“With the love and respect of the people, and in honour of our beloved Zubeen, the government has taken these decisions to ensure his final journey is solemn and dignified,” Sarma said.
