Haren Saikia, a differently-abled man from Sesuguri-Charai Chapori Ghat in Aahatguri, Majuli constituency, has transformed a transportation crisis into a lifeline for thousands.
Confronted with the severe hardships faced by students and patients due to disrupted boat services caused by the drying of the Brahmaputra River, Saikia constructed an 800-foot-long bamboo bridge to bridge the gap.
"For the past 6 years. I have been witnessing the troubles caused to residents, commuters alike, on a daily basis caused by the rising Brahmaputra river in this ghat. I constructed a 800 ft bamboo bridge for the benefit of the community. Till date I haven't received any help from the government or received any financial aid as such", said Saikia while speaking to the media.
Despite numerous pleas to the government for a permanent solution to the connectivity issues, no action was taken. Saikia’s bamboo bridge now serves as the sole means of transport for residents across six districts: Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Majuli, Golaghat, and Jorhat.
