Assam Police on June 6 night netted seven alleged bike thieves including a leader from AIUDF in the state Silchar city, said Cachar SP, Numal Mahatta.
As per Mahatta, the thieves were arrested during a raid conducted by Silchar Sadar Police at various places in the city and recovered nine stolen scooters and 11 bikes.
''Such incidents were reported in the last month and following this we ran a drive and recovered nine scooters and 11 bikes. Besides this, we also apprehended eight people in connection with the matter, '' the SP added.
Besides this, the police also apprehended one AUIDF leader.
The arrested thieves have been identified as Shakeel Laskar, Diliyar Hussain Laskar, Afzal Hussain Laskar, Abul Hossain Laskar, Nand Kumar Singh, Ranjit Ravidas, Yusuf Ali, and Rebul Uddin Laskar.
Interestingly, Singh had contested the Assembly elections from the Udharband constituency in 2021 on AIUDF's ticket.
''For a long, these thieves indulged in stealing bikes from different places and smuggled them to the neighbouring state of Manipur. On several occasions, the engine of the bike was directly sent to Bangladesh,'' the SP said.
