Assam: Family of deceased Congress worker demands probe into December 18 protest incident

The family of deceased Congress worker and senior advocate Mridul Islam have demanded probe into the death of the Congress worker who allegedly died during a protest at Raj Bhavan on December 18

Hundreds of people attended the funeral prayers (Janaza) of Mridul Islam in Kichmat Katmi, Boko. Notable attendees included Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Borah, MLAs Rekibuddin Ahmed, Nandita Das, Nurul Huda, Zakir Hussain Sikdar, A.K. Rashid Alam, and All India Congress Committee Secretary Manoj Chauhan.

APCC President Bhupen Borah voiced strong criticism of the BJP-led double-engine government, accusing it of running the state on borrowed funds. He called for the ousting of the BJP government in Assam and raised questions about the imposition of smart meters.

Borah reiterated the Congress’ demand for a judicial inquiry into the incident leading to Mridul Islam’s death. He also demanded that the Chief Minister personally apologize to Mridul’s family for the tragedy. Borah questioned the Chief Minister's continued silence on the matter, urging accountability at the highest level.
