In a significant crackdown on smuggling activities, the Customs Department and Lumding Police conducted a joint operation along National Highway 27, seizing a massive consignment of foreign cigarettes worth over Rs 8 lakh.
The operation, carried out on the Silchar-Lumding route, resulted in the interception of a truck (AS 01 MC 8831) transporting 480 cartons of Burmese-origin cigarettes. The consignment, allegedly en route from Sonari Haat in Silchar to Guwahati, was seized in Lumding before it could reach its destination.
Authorities have arrested the truck driver, identified as Rahan Hussain Laskar, and further investigations are underway to determine the larger network involved in the smuggling operation.
With Lumding’s railway route and NH-27 emerging as key transit corridors for illicit trade, law enforcement agencies have intensified their surveillance to curb the movement of contraband goods.
