Assam gas leak fury: Protesters demand arrest of SK Petro owner

Protests erupted in Nazira on Monday as members of the Bir Lachit Sena, led by Shrinkhal Chaliha, gathered outside the ONGC Assam Asset office, demanding justice and accountability over an ongoing gas leak in the Bhatiapar Barichuk area of Sivasagar district.

The agitation was triggered by the uncontrolled gas leakage from an ONGC crude well, first reported on June 10, which sparked fear among residents about its impact on health, agriculture, and the environment.

Protesters raised slogans against ONGC and the Assam government, expressing outrage over the company’s failure to control the emission for nearly two weeks.

Demonstrators also demanded the arrest of Krishan Agarwal, the owner of SK Petro Service Pvt. Ltd., which they allege is linked to the site where the leak occurred. The Bir Lachit Sena called for immediate compensation for affected families and accountability for those responsible.

As the crisis unfolded, nearly 3,000 people were impacted, with 75 families initially forced to evacuate. Fears of a Baghjan-like disaster loomed large as toxic fumes spread across the area. Although ONGC has termed the situation “under control,” residents and local groups remain deeply sceptical.

According to ONGC officials, containment operations are now in their final stages. A team of U.S.-based experts, working with ONGC’s Crisis Management Team (CMT), has managed to reduce gas pressure at the well significantly.

Scientific studies conducted on-site reportedly show no hydrocarbon traces beyond 30 metres, and a recent public advisory has permitted residents living beyond 500 metres to return home.

To further mitigate fire risks, ONGC has been conducting continuous water blanketing at the site.

While officials project optimism, many affected families are still reeling under the aftermath of the leak, demanding long-term support, credible answers, and justice for the distress they have endured.
