Assam: 'Gay' love turns deadly in Jorhat, youth faces attack by former lover

A shocking incident unfolded in Mariani, Jorhat, on the evening of April 27 at around 6:00 PM, when a young man was the victim of an attempted murder.

The incident, which took place in the remote village of Chenghat Majunganja in Dhing, has stirred significant public outrage and concern.

As the details of the attack began to emerge, it was revealed that the incident was linked to a complex relationship involving same-sex love.

According to family members, the motive behind the attack was rooted in a failed romantic relationship between the victim, Pragyan Gogoi, and the accused, Dul Bairagi, from Majuli.

The two had met two years ago via Facebook, and over time, developed a relationship. At first, Dul, who lived in Jorhat, promised Pragyan a job, which led him to be taken into Dul’s home. However, their relationship had faced regular conflicts.

About a few months ago, Pragyan decided to part ways with Dul and return to his own home, seeking distance from the troubled relationship. Pragyan had started seeing a young woman, which further fueled Dul's anger and resentment.

According to family members, the situation escalated when Dul began sending threatening messages to Pragyan over the phone. On the evening of the attack, Dul, who was on a motorcycle, called Pragyan and told him, “I am near your house; I want to meet you once.” When the two met, Dul suddenly attacked Pragyan with a hidden sharp object from behind, attempting to kill him. Miraculously, Pragyan managed to escape and flee the scene.

He later informed his family, who rushed him to a hospital for treatment. Currently, Dul is on the run, and a police investigation is underway. The entire region has been left in shock following the incident, which has raised serious concerns about the violence stemming from broken relationships, particularly in the context of same-sex love.

Authorities are searching for Dul, and further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
