Assam: Hindu body demands apology from Congress leader Bhupen Borah for controversial remarks on Maa Durga

Bhupen Borah, the State Congress president, has once again ignited a firestorm of criticism, this time targeting revered Hindu deity Maa Durga. Bora's inflammatory remarks have incited widespread condemnation, with many accusing him of repeatedly targeting Hinduism for political gain, allegedly in the interest of Miya Muslims.

The latest controversy erupted during Bora's campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, as he took aim at BJP's Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency candidate, Suresh Bora. At a public meeting in Nagaon, Bhupen Bora drew outrage by likening the dragging of Suresh Bora to a sacrificial goat during Durga Puja, insinuating that the BJP candidate was being sacrificed for political gain.

The comments immediately drew backlash from various religious organizations, including the Sadou Asom Devalaya Sangha (SADS) , whose vice-president condemned Bora's language as unbecoming of a party chief. The Assam Devalaya Sangha demanded an apology from Bhupen Bora for disrespecting Hindu deities and temples stating the need for religious sensitivity in political discourse.

"When a leader of a renowned party such as Congress speaks in such a manner, especially with the Lok Sabha elections approaching, it is deeply concerning. Bhupen Borah has severely damaged the reputation of Congress by using such language. He is not a theatre comedian; therefore, he should refrain from using such language and instead focus on discussing important matters. It is regrettable that he chose to use such language, particularly when speaking about a temple, and even worse, he appeared to find it amusing. We strongly condemn such language, and he should issue an apology. This is not the first time he has caused offense; previously, he insulted Lord Krishna, and now this. By using such language, he is dividing votes, which will ultimately benefit BJP. As a politician, he should communicate in a more appropriate manner and focus on political issues rather than indulging in such discourse about temples.", the Vice president said.

This isn't the first time Bhupen Bora has courted controversy with his remarks on Hinduism. Previously, he faced criticism for referring to Lord Sri Krishna as a "jihadi," sparking widespread outrage and demands for an apology. Despite facing humiliation and pressure to apologize for his comments, Bora has continued to make divisive statements, further alienating himself from both political rivals and members of his own party.

In response to the latest uproar, Bhupen Bora's detractors have called for his expulsion from the political arena, urging him to refrain from making derogatory remarks about Hindu gods and goddesses. They stated the importance of cultural understanding and respect, urging Bora to educate himself on Hindu scriptures before engaging in political discourse.
