In a dramatic turn of events in Digboi, locals forcibly shaved the head of a BJP worker, Kalpajyoti Phukan, after a viral phone conversation sparked outrage within the Moran community.
The tension traces back to a viral video involving BJP MLA Suren Phukan and Junmoni Moran, an independent candidate contesting from Ward No. 7 of the Borhapjan Panchayat.
The video allegedly showed Junmoni confronting the MLA for violating the model code of conduct during a panchayat poll campaign. The video quickly spread across social media and gained widespread attention in state media.
Following this, supporters of MLA Phukan filed an FIR against Junmoni Moran at the Doomdooma Police Station, leading to her arrest and subsequent jail custody.

While Junmoni Moran was held at the station, a phone call recording surfaced on social media involving a heated exchange between Congress leader Lachit Moran (alias Rajiv) and Nani Gopal Dutta, a close aide of MLA Phukan. In the recording, BJP worker Kalpajyoti Phukan was heard questioning Lachit Moran's presence in Tingrai, implying a threat.
This triggered a strong backlash from the Moran community. Enraged locals from the community dragged Kalpajyoti Phukan from his residence in Bogapani and brought him to the Tingrai market, where they publicly forced him to kneel and shaved his head in protest.
Police later reached the scene and rescued Phukan. Additionally, Digboi police detained Akash Moran, former president of the Moran Students’ Union (Digboi regional unit), and brought him to Digboi police station for questioning.
The incident has stirred significant tension in Digboi, with authorities on high alert to prevent further escalation.
