Margherita’s residents in Assam are grappling with worsening soil erosion along the Buridehing and Tirap rivers, with more than 1,000 bighas of agricultural land being lost regularly.
Despite assurances from Assam Irrigation Minister Pijush Hazarika during his visit three years ago, no concrete action has been taken, leaving locals in dire straits.
Kanchan Borah, Vice President of Asom Jatiyotabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) Tinsukia district committee, expressed disappointment over the government's inaction, stating that repeated promises have yielded no results.
“The minister assured us of steps to control erosion, yet nothing has been done, and our lands continue to vanish into the river,” he said.

Borah also accused Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma’s representatives of merely conducting "photo sessions" for social media optics at the erosion sites rather than addressing the crisis.
Locals are now demanding urgent intervention from the Margherita Co-District Commissioner, MLA Bhaskar Sharma, and Minister Pijush Hazarika to implement effective erosion control measures before the situation worsens further.
