Assam: Margherita students raise black flag in protest against CAA

Members of the Margherita Regional Student Union took to the streets on March 14 brandishing black flags at NH 315 Block Tiniali in Margherita. Their target: the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) enforced by the BJP-led government both at the union and state levels.

Margherita Police intervened as the activists of the Margherita Regional Student Union unfurled their black flags. Undeterred, the students raised their voices in protest, shouting slogans denouncing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Rupam Baruah, the literary secretary of Tinsukia District Student Union, expressed disappointment, stating, "It is very unfortunate that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government, both at the union and state levels has failed to uphold their promise of safeguarding the Jati (community), Mati (land) and Bheti (home) of Assam and its people." Baruah stated the detrimental impact of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on the rich art, culture, language, religion and traditions of Assam.

"The Assamese people shall never accept the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at any cost," said Baruah.
