With just days left for the Panchayat elections, residents of Ward No. 2 under Hamukjaan Gaon Panchayat in Ledo, falling under 83 Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency, have taken a strong stand against years of neglect.
On Tuesday, they submitted a memorandum to the Tikok Tea Company, demanding immediate repair of severely damaged roads and drainage systems.
Locals allege that the constant movement of heavy vehicles transporting raw tea leaves to the Tikok Tea Company has led to the deterioration of road conditions, making travel extremely difficult—especially during the monsoon. Despite repeated complaints, they say the authorities and former Panchayat leaders failed to take effective action.
“This is not the first time we've raised the issue,” said local resident Kanchan Borah. “But today's joint initiative reflects the collective frustration and our renewed resolve.”
The memorandum highlights unfulfilled promises made prior to previous elections, particularly regarding basic infrastructure development. Residents have now warned of launching an economic blockade if repairs are not started immediately.

“If any untoward incident occurs, the responsibility will lie with the Margherita MLA, the Co-District Commissioner, and the Tikok Tea Company management,” Borah stated firmly.
Despite the frustration, the tone of the protest remains peaceful yet assertive, with residents emphasizing their commitment to constructive dialogue.
“We are hopeful this time,” said Siraj Ahmed, another resident. “We’ve made our case clearly—now it’s up to the authorities to act before it’s too late.”
The situation underscores a growing trend of grassroots mobilization ahead of the elections, with citizens demanding accountability and tangible change in their local governance.
