Assam minister inspects waterlogged Guwahati; 5 dead as rainfall triggers landslides, floods

Assam's Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Jayanta Mallabaruah, on May 31 visited multiple flood-affected localities in Guwahati to assess the growing crisis caused by incessant and heavy rainfall over the past few days.

Speaking to the media during his inspection, Minister Mallabaruah confirmed that five people have lost their lives so far due to rain-related incidents, including a tragic landslide in the Chapaidong area that claimed three lives.

“Guwahati has been receiving intense rainfall for the past 2-3 days. Waterlogging has severely disrupted normal life. We are making every effort to resolve the issue and provide relief,” the minister said.

"The Juripar area was originally a river, but due to unplanned urban development, it has turned into a drain. The water now flowing through it comes from Meghalaya. We are therefore considering converting the entire stretch of road parallel to the Juripar area into a road-cum-drain that will eventually flow into the Silsako Beel."

Relief and rescue operations are currently underway across the affected zones. Urban local bodies and disaster response teams have been mobilised to clear clogged drains, assist stranded residents, and distribute emergency supplies.

Authorities have urged citizens in vulnerable areas to remain cautious and report any signs of landslides or severe water accumulation to the nearest control rooms.
