The son of Dhubri MLA Nazrul Hoque, Atique Shakil, has once again stirred controversy after staging a celebratory event inside the BN College campus, an act that has drawn sharp criticism from students and community members alike.
The incident, which took place on Monday, involved the bursting of firecrackers and distribution of sweets in honour of Farida Yasmin Miah’s election as the president of the Dhubri Zilla Parishad. Students of BN College strongly objected to the celebrations, calling them a violation of campus rules and an unsafe precedent for future activities.
The controversy deepened after MLA Nazrul Hoque publicly referred to Miah as “their candidate,” despite her contesting and winning as an independent in the last panchayat elections. His statement, coupled with his son’s actions, has fueled allegations of political interference and disregard for the neutrality of educational institutions.

Students have condemned the incident, pointing out that the presence of a political figure’s son engaging in disruptive activities like setting off firecrackers raises serious concerns about campus safety. Faculty members, too, expressed unease over the incident, which they believe undermines the autonomy and sanctity of the college.
This is not the first time Atique Shakil has been at the center of public scrutiny. His repeated actions, critics argue, reflect a troubling culture of impunity linked to political influence. The BN College administration is yet to issue a formal response to the matter.
