Assam: Morigaon NGO performs over 150 last rites for the needy

A Morigaon-based voluntary organisation, Sahay Assam, has been quietly performing last rites for over 150 unclaimed or financially distressed deceased individuals over the past several years.

Dedicated to the cause of serving humanity, the organisation recently came to the aid of a grieving and helpless husband, Parmeshwar Thakur, who had lost his wife, Moushumi Devi, to jaundice.

The couple, originally from Dhing in Nagaon district, had been living in Morigaon and earning their livelihood through daily wage labour. Struggling to make ends meet, Parmeshwar was left devastated and without means following his wife's death after a six-month illness.

With no resources for her funeral, Parmeshwar reached out to Sahay Assam.

Responding immediately, the NGO’s president, Raju Mahanta, along with his team, arranged for the body to be taken to Bhootnath Crematorium in Morigaon, where they performed the final rites with dignity and care.

The noble effort was also supported by Morigaon Superintendent of Police Hemanta Kumar Das and Mohar Sultan, owner of Sultan Nursing Home, both of whom extended special assistance for the cremation.

Founded on the principle of “humanity above all,” Sahay Assam has become a beacon of hope and dignity for the destitute. Its tireless work, especially in handling unclaimed bodies and assisting the most vulnerable during their darkest hours, stands as a powerful reminder of the strength of community-driven compassion.

Raju Mahanta and his team continue to set an example in humanitarian service, projecting a true image of kindness and solidarity in Assam.
