Assam: Newly elected panchayat leaders in Dhubri win hearts with self-funded road repair drive

In a rare and heartening example of grassroots leadership in action, newly elected panchayat representatives from Barjan village under Dingdinga Gram Panchayat in Tamarhat, Dhubri district, have taken swift and independent steps to repair a rain-damaged main road—earning widespread admiration from the local community.

Rather than wait for bureaucratic approvals or government-funded schemes, Ward Member Alamgir Mollah and Anchalik Panchayat Member Manzoor Alam personally initiated and funded the restoration of the village’s primary road, which had become virtually impassable due to recent monsoon rains.

“The people trusted us with their votes, and this is the time to honor that trust,” said Manzoor Alam, while supervising repair work on the muddy stretch. “We promised to address the road issue before the elections—and we’re standing by our word.”

The road, vital for daily commutes, access to markets, and emergency needs, had posed growing safety risks. With villagers struggling to navigate the deteriorated path, the leaders’ decision to act immediately—without red tape—has been praised as both practical and inspiring.

Alamgir Mollah echoed his colleague’s resolve: “Waiting for a scheme might take months. People needed help now. This is what leadership means—being present, being accountable, and taking action.”

The duo’s hands-on involvement and use of personal resources have struck a chord with residents, who gathered during the repairs to show their appreciation. Many hailed the effort as a hopeful sign of a new, responsive era in local governance.

As monsoon challenges continue to expose gaps in rural infrastructure, the Barjan example stands as a compelling case for community-led development and the power of promises kept.
