Assam Outsource Power Workers Union intensify protest, demand regularization of temporary employees

The Assam State Outsource Power Workers Union has ramped up its protest efforts in Morigaon, calling on the state's power authorities to address a set of 11 key demands.

Representing temporary workers across three major power entities—Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL), Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited (AEGCL), and Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGCL)—the union has repeatedly urged Assam's Minister of Power and the Chief Minister to act on these long-standing issues, including the regularization of temporary employees.

During a central executive and general meeting held on July 21 at the ASEB Pensioner Bhawan in Six Mile, Guwahati, union members resolved to escalate their protest by holding a two-hour sit-in at every electricity cycle premises across the state. The union has warned that if the department and government fail to respond to their demands, particularly concerning the regularization of employees who have served for years on temporary contracts, they will intensify their agitation. A three-hour sit-in is planned in front of Bijuli Bhawan, the headquarters of APDCL, on Thursday.

The union's actions culminated in the submission of a memorandum outlining their 11 demands to the Chairman of APDCL. The memorandum was delivered through the Chief Executive Officer of the Power Circle, signaling the union's determination to see their demands met.
