Assam: Panchayat members accused of collecting money from poor families under PMAY scheme

Residents at Majpara village in North Salmara, Assam have accused the panchayat members of looting the poor families in the name of providing government houses under the centrally sponsored scheme Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

Even after repeated complaints, no measures have been taken so far to make the department transparent and clean even though news of corruption in the panchayat has gained a special place in the media.

In a similar case, a member of Majpara village in North Salmara panchayat of Bongaigaon district has been accused of collecting money in the name of providing government houses to poor families.

Many poor families in the village have been reported of being deprived of PMAY houses as they are unable to pay money to panchayat member Dipanti Dutta.

According to the complaint, while several financially advanced members of the village got PMAY houses, a section of poor families did not get government houses even after their names appeared in the beneficiary list.

The president and secretary of the panchayat were contacted several times but the villagers did not get the benefit.

Complaints state that generally Rs 500 to Rs 5000 is demanded from a poor family in the name of providing government houses under PMAY scheme.

Meanwhile, the poor beneficiaries of PMAY scheme await government's action against these panchayat representatives who have been looting the poor.
