Assam: PM Modi inaugurates Barauni-Guwahati natural gas pipeline

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Barauni-Guwahati Natural Gas Pipeline (BGPL), a milestone project linking the North East region to the National Gas Grid.

Addressing a gathering here in Assam's Jorhat Modi said, "With today's dedication, Assam's refining capacity has doubled and that of Numaligarh alone has tripled, this is a result of the priority we have placed in developing North East's energy sector."

This strategic project aims to enhance the availability of natural gas in the northeastern part of India, thereby boosting the region's overall development. 

The 718km pipeline which traverses through Bihar, West Bengal and Assam has been built at Rs 3,992 crore by GAIL, a Maharatna PSU under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

The pipeline is designed to supply natural gas to nine geographical areas covering 31 districts across these three states through authorised city gas distribution (CGD) entities along its route.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today initiated several projects valued at ₹18,000 crore from Meleng Meteli Pothar in Jorhat. Prior to a public gathering at Meleng Meteli Pothar, PM Modi virtually launched several projects.

He inaugurated Tinsukia Medical College and Hospital, a Child Care Unit at B. Baruah Cancer Institute in Guwahati, the Barauni to Guwahati natural gas pipeline, and two crude oil pumping stations of Oil India Limited.

The Prime Minister has virtually laid the foundation stone for Sivasagar Medical College and Hospital, Guwahati and Digboi Refinery expansion projects, including IOCL’s Bethkuchi Terminal in Guwahati.
