Assam: Police seize brown sugar worth Rs 2 crore in Cachar, two held

Assam police on March 26 apprehended two persons and seized 33 soap cases containing around 500 grams of brown sugar at Sonabari Ghat in the Cachar district of the state, said an official.

As per the official, the arrested persons have been identified as Chinu Begum Laskar and Shah Rukh Hussain Laskar.

''On March 27 we launched an operation against the drug menace. During the operation, we apprehended two persons along with 33 soap cases containing brown sugar. The entire operation was carried out at the Sonabari Ghat bypass near the petrol pump under the leadership of Amit Singh, Officer-in-charge of Sadar Police station. Out of two arrested persons, one was a woman, identified as Chinu Begum Laskar. The man was identified as Shahrukh Hussain Laskar. Both of them belong to the same family,'' said Cachar Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta while speaking to media over the matter.    

The SP further said that the market value of the seized brown sugar is around Rs 2 crore and the family has been indulging in such crimes for a long.
